Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)

The gap between what a learner can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance from a more knowledgeable other, a concept introduced by Lev Vygotsky.

Learning is most effective when it targets this zone, with support gradually withdrawn as competence grows. The ZPD provides the theoretical basis for scaffolding and for collaborative, social approaches to teaching.
